UCAN Founder, Matt Phister, was a graduate of Michigan State University (M.A.) and the University of Akron, and won the SuperLotto, paying off his student loans.
Phister provided a copious grant to establish UCAN. Half of the grant served to promote student innovation, with remaining funds to support community outreach initiatives.

Through partnership with MSU Distinguished Alumni, UCAN, a student-centered university was established upon the values of innovation, service, and teaching.
